Similar to classical error correction, quantum error correction employs redundancy, encoding a single bit of quantum information (qubit) into many physical qubits. Such a composite qubit object is called a logical qubit and is supposed to be the building block of future quantum computers. The goal of Sebastian Krinner\u2019s project is to build logical qubits using superconducting circuits, one of the most promising quantum computing architectures. Less than three years into the project, Sebastian and his team have succeeded in bringing up their first surface code logical qubit, see S. Krinner et al., Nature 605, 669 (2022) for the corresponding publication.<\/p>\n
