FASTE project: Additive manufacturing of high-performance multi-material structures for use in harsh environments

The use of several materials for a single mechanical part enables high-performance materials to be limited to critical areas and the use of recyclable and less expensive alloys to be maximised. The multi-material solution also optimises the performance of parts subjected to multiple stresses (mechanical, thermal, chemical, etc.) by taking advantage of the specific characteristics of each alloy used. However, the manufacture, mechanical characterisation and design of these multi-material parts remain at a low level of development.
The FASTE project brings together ISAE SUPAERO and ETH Zürich to explore the ability of three metal additive technologies (LPBF, p-LMD, WAAM) to produce multi-material parts. The approach covers the development of new manufacturing, mechanical characterisation and dimensioning methodologies for multi-material parts, which do not exist today. This global approach to the value chain meets current environmental and economic challenges by optimising the life cycle of high-performance metal alloys, paving the way for more sustainable industrial solutions.
